One thing that I love about this recipe for roasted cabbage steaks is that you don’t need a bunch of crazy ingredients. All of the flavor comes from a few basic ingredients. Cabbage is drizzled with a bit of olive oil and topped with parmesan cheese, garlic, red pepper flakes, and salt. That’s all you need, and if you’re going meatless this recipe is completely vegetarian!

This is one of those dishes you can even get the kids to eat without much resistance. Baking it in the oven allows you to cook cabbage any time of year too. No grill to heat up and easy clean-up!

There are four easy steps keeping you from indulging in this roasted cabbage recipe. It’s beyond simple but tastes like it took forever to make. Here are the directions to get you started.

Prepare the cabbage

Cut cabbage into ½ inch thick slices and lay them on a foil-lined baking sheet.

Make the topping

In a small bowl, mix together the olive oil, garlic, crushed red pepper flakes, Parmesan cheese, and salt. Brush mixture over the cabbage slices lightly coating each side.

Bake

Bake in a 400 degrees F oven for 15 minutes. Flip cabbage slices and continue baking for another 15 minutes.

You can add all sorts of things to this easy recipe. Here are a few ideas for you to consider trying.

  • Bacon – Who doesn’t love bacon? Cut up some bacon and cook it in a skillet until it’s crispy. Then sprinkle it on the roasted cabbage after you flip it. It’s a great way to add even more flavor. We will eat the roasted cabbage as the main course when we add bacon because it turns it into a meal.
  • Spices – Sprinkle any combination of seasonings you like. It’s that easy, and you can change the flavor so much.
  • Lemon Juice – Drizzle some freshly squeezed lemon juice on top of the roasted cabbage right before serving. It adds some zesty goodness, and it’s delicious.
  • Cheese – We use parmesan cheese, but you can swap it for other types of cheese. Mozzarella would be fantastic!

What’s The Best Way To Cut The Cabbage?

When making cabbage steaks, first start by cutting off the thick bottom stem and then remove any discolored leaves. Rest the cabbage on its side and cut 1/2 inch thick slices starting from the top end and working your way towards the stem end.

How Do You Store Cooked Cabbage?

If you end up with any leftovers, you should allow them to cool completely. Once cooled, you can place them inside a storage container or bag that’s airtight. The cooked cabbage will last in the fridge for three days.

If you know you can’t eat all of it within three days, then I recommend freezing it. In order to freeze, lay the pieces on a clean baking sheet and place it in the freezer. Let the pan stay in the freezer for 3 hours. Then take the cabbage off of the pan and put them into another container and freeze for up to 8 months. Flash freezing keeps the pieces of cabbage from sticking to each other.

When you are ready to serve it, you will need to make sure it’s been thawed out. In order to do that, it’s best to put it in the fridge the night before you want it. Once it’s thawed, it’s ready to warm up. You can either put the pieces of cabbage back into the oven and warm them up until they are hot, cook them in a skillet on the stovetop or microwave for a few minutes until they are warm. Any of those methods work well for reheating the cabbage.

Is Roasted Cabbage Keto?

Yes! If you eat keto or low carb, then eating cabbage is a must. It’s filling and isn’t loaded with carbs, so it’s an excellent alternative to foods like potatoes. It’s a great addition to any keto meal plan.
